Tesla's China domestic sales fall 11.9% in Jan–Sep as Shanghai exports double
Tesla sold 381,088 cars to Chinese buyers in January–September, down 11.9% year-over-year per CPCA data, while Giga Shanghai exports more than doubled to 361,972 — the plant is shifting from serving local demand to supplying overseas markets.
Giga Shanghai's nine-month wholesale reached 743,060 units, up 22.5% year-over-year. Exports now make up about 48.7% of wholesale, versus 28.6% a year earlier, as overseas shipments fill the gap left by weaker domestic sales.
Unlike the September-only figures reported earlier (China-made sales +5%, exports +58%), these are year-to-date numbers: the month showed renewed growth, but cumulative domestic demand remains clearly down.
For shareholders, the takeaway is that Shanghai's output stays high but increasingly depends on demand in Europe and other export markets. Wholesale counts factory shipments, so it can differ in timing from actual customer deliveries.
